Facial Pain Treatment

Expert treatment for chronic facial pain and myofascial dysfunction — hands-on therapy to identify trigger points and restore comfortable function.

Understanding Facial Pain

Chronic facial pain can originate from multiple sources — the jaw muscles, the temporomandibular joint, the cervical spine, or the trigeminal nerve pathway. Because these structures are so closely interconnected, facial pain often involves more than one source, which is why it can be difficult to diagnose and treat effectively.

Common symptoms and presentations include:

  • Aching pain in the cheeks, temples, or around the ears
  • Pain with chewing, talking, or yawning
  • A sensation of pressure or tightness across the face
  • Referred pain patterns that mimic sinus problems or toothaches
  • Burning, tingling, or numbness in the facial area
  • Pain that worsens with stress, fatigue, or certain jaw positions

Facial pain is more common than many people realize and can significantly impact quality of life — affecting eating, speaking, sleeping, and social interaction. Many patients have seen multiple specialists before discovering that physical therapy can address the musculoskeletal sources of their pain.

Physical therapy is uniquely effective for facial pain because it addresses all the musculoskeletal structures that may be involved — the jaw muscles, cervical spine, and surrounding soft tissues — in a comprehensive, hands-on manner.

How We Treat Facial Pain

Our approach starts with a thorough assessment to identify all structures contributing to your facial pain. Because facial pain is often multi-factorial, treatment is tailored to your specific findings.

Treatment typically includes:

  • Trigger point release — Targeted manual therapy to deactivate myofascial trigger points in the jaw, face, and cervical muscles that refer pain into the facial area
  • Intraoral soft tissue work — Gentle treatment of the muscles inside the mouth that are often a primary source of facial pain
  • TMJ treatment — Joint mobilization and muscle retraining if TMJ dysfunction is contributing to your symptoms
  • Cervical spine treatment — Addressing upper cervical dysfunction that can refer pain into the face and temple area
  • Dry needling — For persistent trigger points that are not fully responsive to manual techniques alone
  • Self-management education — Teaching you effective self-massage and relaxation techniques for flare-up management

Every session is one-on-one with a licensed physical therapist experienced in treating facial and jaw pain. This individualized approach is essential because facial pain presentations vary widely and require careful, hands-on assessment at each visit to guide treatment.

What to Expect

Your evaluation will include palpation of the jaw and facial muscles, TMJ assessment, cervical spine screening, and mapping of your pain referral patterns. This comprehensive approach helps us identify all the sources contributing to your facial pain and build a targeted treatment plan.

Because facial pain often involves multiple overlapping sources, it may take a few sessions to fully identify the primary drivers of your symptoms. Most patients begin seeing meaningful improvement within three to four weeks. A typical course of care runs six to twelve sessions, though complex or chronic cases may require longer treatment.

We coordinate with your dentist, ENT, or neurologist as needed to ensure all potential contributors are being addressed. This collaborative approach is especially important for facial pain, where dental, neurological, and musculoskeletal factors may all play a role.

For your first visit, wear comfortable clothing that allows access to your neck and jaw. Bring your insurance card and any relevant medical or dental records. Delaware does not require a physician referral to begin physical therapy, and we accept Medicare and most major insurance plans. Our office staff will verify your benefits before your first appointment.
