PHYSICAL THERAPY IN WILMINGTON, DE
Frequently Asked Questions
Answers to common questions about physical therapy at The Back Clinic — insurance, scheduling, what to expect, and more.
Common Questions About Physical Therapy
Do I need a referral to see a physical therapist?
No. In Delaware, you have direct access to physical therapy, meaning you can schedule an evaluation without a doctor’s referral*. Some insurance plans may require a referral for coverage purposes — our office staff can help you check your specific plan.
*If you’re using Medicare, Medicaid, Motor Vehicle, Workers’ Compensation, or a plan that requires prior authorization, a physician prescription is needed from the start. Not sure? We’ll help you figure it out when you call.
What should I wear to my appointment?
Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing that allows you to move freely. For lower extremity conditions, shorts are helpful. For shoulder or neck conditions, a tank top or T-shirt works well. Athletic shoes are recommended.
How long is each appointment?
Initial evaluations are approximately one hour. Follow-up treatment sessions are typically 30 to 45 minutes. Every minute of your appointment is spent one-on-one with your therapist.
How often will I need to come?
Most patients are seen two to three times per week initially, tapering to one to two times per week as they improve. Your therapist will recommend a frequency based on your specific condition and goals.
Insurance & Cost Questions
What insurance do you accept?
We accept most major insurance plans including Medicare, Medicare Advantage, Blue Cross Blue Shield, Aetna, Cigna, United Healthcare, and workers’ compensation. Call our office at (302) 998-4477 to verify your specific plan.
What will my out-of-pocket cost be?
Out-of-pocket costs depend on your insurance plan, deductible status, and copay or coinsurance amounts. We verify your benefits before your first visit and explain your expected costs upfront so there are no surprises.
Do you offer self-pay options?
Yes. For patients without insurance or with high deductible plans, we offer competitive self-pay rates.
Treatment Questions
What makes The Back Clinic different from other PT clinics?
Every session at The Back Clinic is fully one-on-one with a licensed physical therapist. Your therapist is with you for the entire appointment — providing hands-on manual therapy, guiding your exercises, and adjusting your treatment in real time. We never use aides, and we never double-book patients. This level of individualized attention produces better results and faster recoveries.
Do you have a pool?
Yes. We have a heated therapy pool on-site that is used for aquatic therapy. The warm water is particularly beneficial for patients with arthritis, post-surgical conditions, spinal stenosis, and balance problems.
How long until I feel better?
Most patients begin noticing improvement within two to four weeks of starting treatment. The total length of your episode of care depends on your specific condition — a typical course of treatment runs 8 to 12 visits. Your therapist will set clear expectations during your first visit.
