LOW BACK PAIN TREATMENT IN WILMINGTON, DE

PHYSICAL THERAPY IN WILMINGTON, DE

Personalized, one-on-one physical therapy for low back pain. We identify the root cause of your pain and build a treatment plan that gets you moving again — without surgery or long-term medication.

What Causes Low Back Pain?

Low back pain is the single most common reason people seek physical therapy — and one of the leading causes of missed work and limited activity worldwide. But “low back pain” is a symptom, not a diagnosis. The key to effective treatment is identifying what’s actually causing it.

Common causes of low back pain include:

  • Muscle strain or ligament sprain — from lifting, twisting, or prolonged sitting
  • Disc issues — bulging or herniated discs that may compress nearby nerves
  • Degenerative changes — age-related wear on joints and discs (arthritis, stenosis)
  • SI joint dysfunction — pain originating from the sacroiliac joint at the base of the spine
  • Poor posture and deconditioning — weak core muscles and prolonged sedentary positions
  • Post-surgical changes — scar tissue, muscle weakness, or compensatory movement patterns

Low back pain can range from a dull, constant ache to a sharp sensation that makes it difficult to stand or walk. Some patients experience radiating pain into the hips or legs, which may indicate nerve involvement. Others notice stiffness that worsens after sitting for long periods or first thing in the morning.

Many people are told to “rest” or “wait it out.” But research consistently shows that early, active treatment leads to faster recovery and better long-term outcomes than prolonged rest. A physical therapist can help determine the root cause and begin addressing it right away — often before imaging is even needed.

How We Treat Low Back Pain

At The Back Clinic, every low back pain patient starts with a comprehensive one-on-one evaluation. Your physical therapist will assess your movement, strength, flexibility, posture, and pain patterns to determine exactly what’s driving your symptoms.

From there, we build a treatment plan that may include:

  • manual therapy — hands-on joint mobilization and soft tissue work to restore mobility and reduce pain
  • Therapeutic exercise — targeted strengthening for your core, hips, and spine to support long-term recovery
  • dry needling — trigger point treatment for deep muscle tension and referred pain patterns
  • Aquatic therapy — low-impact movement in our heated pool for patients who need a gentler approach
  • Lumbar traction — decompression to relieve disc-related pressure
  • Posture and movement retraining — correcting the habits that contribute to recurring pain
  • Home exercise program — a plan you can actually follow between visits to accelerate your progress

Every session is one-on-one with a licensed physical therapist — not a technician, not a rotating provider. This allows us to monitor your response closely, make real-time adjustments, and build the kind of trust that leads to better outcomes.

We focus on more than just relieving your current symptoms. Our treatment approach addresses the underlying causes of your pain so you can get back to daily activities, work, exercise, and the things you enjoy — with the tools and knowledge to prevent recurrence.

Whether your low back pain is acute (recent onset), chronic (lasting more than 12 weeks), or somewhere in between, our team has the clinical expertise and the range of treatment options to help. Many of our patients have tried other approaches before finding lasting improvement with the individualized care they receive here.

What to Expect

Your first visit is a 60-minute evaluation where we’ll listen to your history, perform a thorough physical assessment, and explain what we find in plain language. You’ll leave with a clear diagnosis, a treatment plan, and exercises you can start that day.

Follow-up sessions are typically 30 minutes, 2–3 times per week, with most patients seeing significant improvement within 4–6 weeks. We track your progress at every visit and adjust your plan as you improve.

To get the most out of your first appointment, wear comfortable clothing that allows easy movement. Bring your insurance card and any imaging reports (X-ray, MRI) if available — these help but are not required to begin treatment.

Throughout your care, your physical therapist will explain every step of the process so you always understand what we’re doing and why. Our goal is to help you feel confident and in control of your recovery from day one.

In Delaware, you don’t need a referral to start physical therapy for the first 30 days. Most major insurance plans are accepted, including Medicare. If you have questions about coverage, our team can verify your benefits before your first visit.
