Scoliosis & Postural Pain Treatment

Personalized physical therapy to reduce pain from scoliosis and postural imbalances through targeted strengthening and alignment correction.

What Is Scoliosis & Postural Pain?

Scoliosis is a lateral curvature of the spine that can develop during adolescence or progress gradually in adulthood. While mild curves may not cause noticeable symptoms, moderate to severe scoliosis — or even minor curves combined with muscle imbalances — can lead to chronic back pain, stiffness, and fatigue.

Common signs of scoliosis-related pain include:

  • Uneven shoulders, hips, or waistline
  • Back pain that worsens with prolonged standing or activity
  • Muscle fatigue on one side of the back
  • Difficulty maintaining an upright posture comfortably

Postural pain is broader and affects people of all ages. Prolonged sitting, desk work, repetitive movements, and muscle weakness can all create postural patterns that stress the spine and surrounding tissues. Over time, these patterns can cause persistent discomfort in the back, neck, and shoulders.

Whether your pain stems from a structural curve, habitual posture, or a combination of both, physical therapy is one of the most effective ways to address these conditions by correcting muscle imbalances, improving spinal mobility, and changing how your body distributes load through the spine.

How We Treat Scoliosis & Postural Pain

At The Back Clinic, our therapists take a whole-body approach to scoliosis and postural dysfunction. We assess not just the curve or posture itself, but the muscle imbalances, movement patterns, and lifestyle factors that contribute to your pain.

Your individualized treatment plan may include:

  • Scoliosis-specific exercises — targeted movements designed to improve symmetry, elongate the spine, and reduce curve-related muscle tension
  • Postural retraining — teaching your body new alignment habits for sitting, standing, and moving throughout the day
  • Core stabilization — strengthening the deep spinal muscles that provide support and reduce strain on the curves
  • manual therapy — hands-on techniques to improve joint mobility and release tight, overworked muscles
  • Stretching and flexibility work — addressing tightness in the hips, thoracic spine, and shoulders that contributes to postural dysfunction
  • Ergonomic guidance — practical adjustments to your workspace, sleeping position, and daily habits to reduce postural stress

Every session is one-on-one with a licensed physical therapist who monitors your alignment and progress closely. Our goal is to reduce your pain, improve how your body functions, and give you the tools to manage your posture independently over the long term.

For patients with adolescent scoliosis, we work collaboratively with orthopedic specialists to ensure a coordinated care approach — including monitoring curves and supporting brace-wearing patients with appropriate exercise programs.

What to Expect

Your evaluation will include a detailed postural assessment, movement screening, flexibility and strength testing, and a discussion of your daily activities and pain patterns. We’ll explain what we find and outline a treatment plan tailored to your specific needs and goals.

Follow-up sessions are typically 30 minutes, 2–3 times per week. Most patients begin to notice improvements in pain, posture, and endurance within 3–4 weeks of consistent treatment.

Wear form-fitting clothing if possible — this allows your therapist to assess your spinal alignment more accurately. Bring any imaging reports (X-ray, MRI) or prior scoliosis measurements if available.

In Delaware, you don’t need a referral to start physical therapy for the first 30 days. Most major insurance plans are accepted, including Medicare. If you have questions about coverage, our team can verify your benefits before your first visit.
