Neck Pain Treatment

Effective, hands-on physical therapy for neck pain — identify the cause, relieve symptoms, and prevent recurrence.

What Causes Neck Pain?

Neck pain is one of the most common conditions we treat at The Back Clinic. It can result from a wide range of causes — muscle strain from poor posture, joint stiffness from degenerative changes, disc problems, or tension related to stress and work habits.

Common symptoms of neck pain include:

  • Stiffness or tightness that limits your ability to turn your head
  • Aching or sharp pain in the neck, shoulders, or upper back
  • Headaches that originate from the base of the skull
  • Radiating pain, numbness, or tingling into the arm or hand
  • Pain that worsens after prolonged sitting, screen time, or sleeping in an awkward position

The cervical spine is uniquely vulnerable because it supports the weight of your head (roughly 10 to 12 pounds) while allowing an extraordinary range of motion. When the muscles, joints, or discs in this area become irritated or dysfunctional, pain can spread to the shoulders, upper back, and even into the arms.

The key to effective treatment is identifying which structures are involved and what movement patterns or habits are contributing to the problem. Many patients live with neck pain far longer than necessary, assuming it will resolve on its own — but targeted physical therapy can often produce significant relief in just a few weeks.

How We Treat Neck Pain

Our therapists use a combination of hands-on techniques and targeted exercises to restore normal cervical function and relieve pain. Your treatment plan may include:

  • Cervical joint mobilization — gentle, skilled techniques to restore normal joint movement and reduce stiffness
  • Soft tissue work — targeting tight muscles in the neck, upper traps, and shoulder blade area
  • dry needling — treating trigger points in the cervical and upper back muscles that contribute to pain and headaches
  • Deep neck flexor strengthening — retraining the stabilizing muscles that support the cervical spine and maintain proper head position
  • Postural correction — addressing forward head posture and rounded shoulders that place excessive strain on the neck
  • Ergonomic guidance — practical adjustments to your workstation, sleeping position, and daily habits to reduce cervical stress

Every session is one-on-one with a licensed physical therapist who can feel the specific restrictions in your neck and adjust treatment in real time. This hands-on, individualized approach is especially important for cervical spine issues, where the anatomy is complex and responses to treatment can vary significantly from person to person.

Our goal is not just pain relief, but long-term resolution — correcting the underlying factors that caused the problem so your neck pain doesn’t keep returning.

What to Expect

Your first visit includes a comprehensive cervical spine evaluation — assessing your range of motion, joint mobility, muscle strength, nerve function, and posture. We’ll explain what we find in plain language and build a treatment plan tailored to your specific condition and goals.

Follow-up sessions are typically 30 minutes, 2–3 times per week. Most patients experience noticeable improvement within 2–4 weeks. We track your progress at every visit and adjust your plan as your symptoms change.

Wear a shirt that allows easy access to your neck and shoulders. Bring any imaging reports (X-ray, MRI) if available, though many neck conditions can be accurately assessed through a thorough clinical exam.

In Delaware, you don’t need a referral to start physical therapy for the first 30 days. Most major insurance plans are accepted, including Medicare. Our team can verify your benefits before your first visit.
