Whiplash Treatment
Expert physical therapy for whiplash recovery — reduce pain, restore mobility, and prevent chronic symptoms after car accidents or trauma.
What Is Whiplash?
Whiplash is a neck injury caused by a rapid back-and-forth movement of the head, most commonly from rear-end car accidents. This sudden force can damage the muscles, ligaments, discs, and joints of the cervical spine, leading to pain, stiffness, headaches, and sometimes dizziness or difficulty concentrating.
Common symptoms of whiplash include:
- Neck pain and stiffness, especially with turning or looking up
- Headaches that start at the base of the skull
- Shoulder and upper back pain or tightness
- Dizziness, fatigue, or difficulty concentrating (“brain fog”)
- Jaw pain or difficulty opening the mouth fully
- Tingling or numbness in the arms
Symptoms do not always appear immediately — it is common for whiplash pain to develop 24 to 72 hours after the incident. This delayed onset leads many people to believe the injury is minor, when the underlying tissue damage may be significant.
Without proper treatment, acute whiplash can develop into a chronic condition with persistent neck pain and headaches that last months or even years. Early physical therapy intervention is one of the strongest predictors of full recovery from whiplash. The sooner treatment begins, the better the long-term outcome.
How We Treat Whiplash
Our approach to whiplash evolves through phases based on your recovery stage:
- Acute phase (weeks 1–2) — gentle range of motion exercises, pain management techniques, and education on activity modification. We help you stay active within safe limits rather than immobilizing the neck, which research shows slows recovery.
- Subacute phase (weeks 2–6) — progressive cervical strengthening, joint mobilization, and soft tissue techniques as inflammation subsides and tolerance increases.
- Recovery phase (weeks 6+) — advanced strengthening, return-to-activity programming, and postural retraining to prevent long-term complications.
Additional treatment techniques may include:
- dry needling — releasing trigger points that develop in the cervical and upper trap muscles after whiplash
- Vestibular rehabilitation — addressing dizziness and balance issues that sometimes accompany whiplash injuries
- TMJ treatment — if the jaw was affected by the impact, we can treat it alongside the cervical spine
Every session is one-on-one with a licensed physical therapist. Whiplash injuries require careful, staged progression — pushing too hard too soon can set recovery back, while being too conservative can lead to chronic stiffness and pain. Our therapists calibrate your treatment to exactly where you are in the healing process.
What to Expect
Your first visit includes a comprehensive cervical spine evaluation that assesses your range of motion, joint mobility, muscle guarding, nerve function, and any associated symptoms like dizziness or jaw pain. We’ll explain what we find and develop a phased treatment plan appropriate for your stage of recovery.
Follow-up sessions are typically 30 minutes, 2–3 times per week. Most patients begin to notice meaningful improvement within the first 2–4 weeks, with continued progress over 6–12 weeks depending on the severity of the injury.
If your whiplash is related to a car accident, we can work with your auto insurance provider. Bring any accident documentation and imaging reports if available.
In Delaware, you don’t need a referral to start physical therapy for the first 30 days. Most major insurance plans are accepted, including Medicare. Don’t wait for symptoms to worsen — early treatment leads to better outcomes.
