What Is Dry Needling?
Dry needling is a skilled technique performed by trained physical therapists using thin, solid needles to target myofascial trigger points — tight, irritable knots within muscles that cause pain and restrict movement. Unlike acupuncture, which is rooted in traditional Chinese medicine, dry needling is based on modern Western medicine and neuroanatomy.
At The Back Clinic, our therapists are certified in dry needling and use it as one tool within a broader, individualized treatment plan.
How Does It Work?
When a needle is inserted into a trigger point, it creates a local twitch response — a brief, involuntary contraction of the muscle. This response helps release the knot, improve blood flow to the area, and reduce the chemical irritation that contributes to pain. Many patients feel an immediate reduction in muscle tension after treatment.
The needles used are very thin — much thinner than injection needles — and no medication is involved. That’s why it’s called “dry” needling.
What Conditions Does It Help?
Dry needling can be effective for a wide range of musculoskeletal conditions, including:
- Neck and back pain
- Tension headaches and migraines
- Shoulder pain and rotator cuff issues
- Tennis elbow and golfer’s elbow
- Hip and knee pain
- Plantar fasciitis
- Muscle strains and sports injuries
- TMJ dysfunction and jaw pain
What to Expect During a Session
Your therapist will identify the trigger points through palpation and movement assessment. The needle insertion takes only a few seconds per point. You may feel a deep ache or twitch during treatment — this is normal and actually a positive sign that the trigger point is releasing.
After treatment, you may experience some soreness similar to a post-workout feeling. This typically resolves within 24–48 hours. Your therapist will follow up with stretching, manual therapy, or exercises to maximize the benefit.
Is It Right for You?
Dry needling isn’t appropriate for everyone. Your therapist will evaluate whether it’s a good fit based on your condition, medical history, and treatment goals. It’s most effective when combined with other therapies — exercise, manual techniques, and patient education — as part of a comprehensive approach.
At The Back Clinic, we never rely on a single technique. Dry needling is one piece of a personalized treatment plan designed around your specific needs and goals.
